Busy road teaches road safety

Year 5 pupils at Roydon Primary Academy have been learning vital life skills with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.
The children watched a presentation on road safety before being taken out to put what they had learnt into practise in the community.
Headteacher Michael Clark said: “Children were given shocking statistics to consider, such as that when we are looking at our mobile phones, 80 per cent of our attention is on the phone and 20 per cent on what is going on around us. To cross the road safely, we have to have the opposite.
“They learnt about the consequences of stepping into the road. The road outside our school involves a blind bend and often speeding cars. If our pupils can learn to deal with that road, they can be safe on any road.
“This was really important work around their safety. It is important children know how to do these things. If they learn it at this age, it sticks with them for life.”
The pupils who took part fed back what they had learnt to the rest of the school.
